Love Wearing Rubber Flip-Flops? Protect Your Foot Health with These Tips

Flip-flops are a summertime favorite for many reasons. First, they’re easy to wear and allow your feet to breathe. Second, they’re budget-friendly, with many varieties costing only a few dollars. However, as quintessential as they may be to summertime fashion, flip-flops can harm your feet in many ways. Here are a few reasons why you should reconsider wearing flip-flops, straight from a podiatrist.

You could sprain your ankle.

Rubber flip-flops are fine for the beach, but if you wear them all day, you will inevitably up your risk for certain injuries. They have very little arch support, and as a result, your feet will start to turn toward the middle of your body instead of staying straight. When that happens, you’re more likely to sprain your ankle, because your feet lack the support necessary to avoid injury.

Your foot could get inflamed.

Even if wearing flip-flops too long doesn’t result in a sprained ankle, you could sustain inflammation to critical tissues. Without the right support, your plantar, the band of tissue in the arch of your foot, will start to pull. That pulling inflames the tissue, resulting in a condition called plantar fasciitis that makes your arches red and painful.

You might need back-up shoes.

Planning on wearing your favorite flip-flops to an all-day event or festival? Better pack back-up shoes – the odds that your rubber flip-flops will snap or wear down to the point that they offer little foot protection are high. Don’t be stranded without shoes! Only wear flip-flops during short periods of time, when you have access to a back-up pair of shoes.
